Frequently Asked Questions
-
Because the grip stays fixed while the wrist adjusts angle and pressure. The hexagonal profile gives your fingers a reference point without thinking about it, and that consistency matters across a long session at the wheel.
-
No. The faces are wide enough that no single edge digs in. In practice it feels more settled in the hand than a round handle and there's less unconscious micro-adjustment because the hand has something to reference.

Tungsten carbide is significantly harder than tool steel. It holds a sharper cutting edge for much longer and doesn't require resharpening under normal use. A carbide trimmer will outlast a steel one many times over, making it a better long-term investment for anyone throwing regularly or running a production studio. The cut is also cleaner: carbide removes clay with less drag, which means finer control and a smoother surface on the foot ring.

Under regular studio use, a tungsten carbide blade typically lasts years without any degradation in cutting performance. Unlike steel tools that dull with use and require resharpening or replacement, carbide holds its edge through continuous throwing sessions. The lifespan depends on the type of clay body (grog and coarser clays are more abrasive), but most potters never need to replace a carbide blade during the tool's lifetime.

If you're buying your first carbide trimmer, the Seven is the most versatile starting point. Its shape handles a wide range of vessel sizes and foot ring profiles, making it the tool most potters reach for across the whole session. The Loop Small is a great addition if you work primarily with small bowls or cups. The Triangle and Pear trimmers are well suited to more specific foot ring shapes and work best as additions once you already have a Seven in your tool roll.

We don't currently list a bundle, but if you'd like to order multiple tools together, send us a message and we can arrange a combined shipping order. Many studio potters find it useful to have two or three profiles — the Triangle Medium, Loop Small, and Pear work particularly well as a core set for most throwing situations.
